Exclusive from WDS
Solo around the World

It's a year for disabled sailing around the World. First, there was the all-disabled crew on the Time&Tide in the BT Global Challenge...Now, in an exclusive release to WDS, a paraplegic has announced plans for a circumnavigation. But this voyage will be different - solo, non-stop and unassisted.

Vincent Lauwers is a 29-year old, Belgian-born Australian who has been using a wheelchair since he broke his back in a motorcycle accident in 1990. As crew, Vincent has completed several ocean voyages including two Sydney-Hobart races with Sailors with disAbilities, a Sydney-based ocean racing organisation:

"Vinnie", as he prefers to be called, will attempt the circumnavigation in Vision Quest, a 14.6m Van-de-Stadt Samoa 47 especially built for the voyage. On Vision Quest, all lines lead back to the cockpit. On deck, Vinnie will "crawl" about; below, he will use a modiified wheelchair - when weather permits.  One of the aims of the circum-navigation is to raise money for Parasail - Caring for Kids, a charity for disabled children to be founded by Vinnie. As WDS goes to press, Vinnie is still to secure a major sponsor. See also Editorial, and Adventures of a Solo Yachtsman
