A new, two-day event spotlighting sports/recreation, the arts and lifestyles of people with disabilities will take place this fall at The Ohio State University.The Midwest Regional Disability Lifestyle Conference and Expo, Saturday, Sept. 29 – Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007, will take place at the Ohio State University’s RPAC Building, in Columbus, OH. The theme of the conference is, “Sharing Our World with You.”Keynote speakers will include Rosemarie Rossetti, PhD., an internationally known professional speaker, trainer, and writer, and William Bauer, PhD., a private practice certified rehabilitation counselor. The event is co-sponsored by OSU, VSA arts of Ohio, Buckeye Paralyzed Veterans of America, Ability Magazine, Columbus Recreation and Parks, and Blaze Sports of Columbus, and Ohio Wheelchair Sports Association.
Derek Mortland, a sports enthusiast, advocate and professional musician with a disability, is the Conference Director. “What better way to improve your life and reach for new heights than to come to the conference and start to develop a new skill or take part in a challenging activity regardless of your disability,” he said.
Workshops designed to educate, and build confidence, skills and technique, will feature hands-on training and guidance on a wide variety of sports and recreation challenges:
· Adaptive sports demos: Basketball, Quad Rugby, Beep Baseball, Tennis, and Martial Arts
· 4-H and inclusion of people with disabilities
· Adaptive skiing, golfing, sled hockey
· Community Arts Programs, and other program information
· Achieving Balance Between Work and Play
· Dancing Wheels performance as well as appearances by several artists with disabilities.
Registration cost: $100 for two days, $75 for students. Meal cost: Add $7 for Saturday boxed lunch, and $20 for Saturday evening reception. Register online and view schedule at: www.ada.osu.edu.
